So you can count on us to look after not just our members, but people in our wider society too. That's why we're delighted to be supporting the RNLI as our chosen 'Charity of the Year'.
The Society will be extending its Charity of the Year partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution into 2013 after raising an astounding £200,000 over the last 12 months.
The £200,000 raised through the hard work and dedication of Society colleagues and members is the highest total achieved in the Society's history through a national fundraising campaign.
The Yorkshire Building Society's Charitable Foundation also supported the 2012 Charity of the Year fundraising campaign and made a significant contribution to boost the total raised by staff members.
Although their mission is to 'save lives at sea', the RNLI also operate inland, from the Loch Ness rescue boat in Scotland to the Tower crew on the Thames; and provide emergency cover for the vital Flood Rescue too.
The RNLI train ordinary people to do extraordinary things - saving the lives of others in difficult and often dangerous circumstances. This training turns volunteers into lifesavers, but it doesn't come cheap, taking on average £1,255 to train a volunteer crew-member and £500 to train a lifeguard. That's why all the funds raised through our 'Come Rain or Shine' campaign will be used to fund this vital training.
Throughout the year, our employees will be holding a series of fundraising events and activities at head offices and branches around the country. For us it's all part of what it means to be part of a mutual organisation - coming together to help people out.
The campaign was launched on Friday, 27 January with our new Chief Executive, Chris Pilling, and our General Management team taking to a lifeboat… moored in the grounds of our Head Office in Bradford! Their challenge? To kickstart the Come Rain or Shine campaign by raising as much money as possible from friends, family and business contacts, using only their mobile phones. Our people also contributed to the fundraising by paying to throw buckets of water over the bosses!
