Why we need to check your identity

We need to check your identity to help protect you from fraud and make sure we're meeting UK regulations.

Choose what type of account you're opening, to find out what ID we need to see.

How we check your identity

We can usually check your identity electronically so there's nothing you need to do. However, in some cases this may not work, for example, if you've recently moved house or you’re not on the electoral roll. In that case, we'll ask you to provide proof of ID.
 

What you need to do

You can take your ID to your nearest branch or agency, or you can post it to us.

 

In branch:

  • One proof of name
  • One proof of address.

By post:

  • One proof of name
  • One proof of address
  • A 3rd document for either your name or address.
You cannot use the same document for both your name and address.  You cannot alter or amend the document in any way and any numbers shown on the document must be visible.

What ID we can accept

An example of what we can accept:

Proof of name

  • Signed UK or foreign passport
  • EU or UK full/provisional driving licence
  • Residence permit issued by the home office to an EU National
  • Armed forces ID card.

Proof of address

  • UK utility bill from the last 3 months
  • Council tax bill from the last 12 months
  • UK bank or building society statement from the last 3 months

  • Current Post Office re-direction letter.
 

Posting your ID to us

You can provide photocopies or the original documents but if you are posting documents which have a photo or signature on them, such as a driving licence or passport, you must send photocopies NOT the originals.
