Marie Curie campaign

2014 - 2016

Hour of Need is the Yorkshire Building Society Group's most ambitious charity drive in its 150 year history and enables Marie Curie Nurses to provide even more vital support for terminally ill people and their families across the UK.

Raising funds, helping people

A message from the Chief Executive of Marie Curie, Dr Jane Collins

Our aim

The campaign was launched in June 2014 with the aim to raise £500,000 by December 2016, which equates to funding an hour of care by a Marie Curie Nurse for every hour of our fundraising campaign. We are delighted to have beaten this target more than a year in advance, thanks to the brilliant support received from our colleagues, members and the general public.

This was achieved through fundraising activities in our branches and agencies, colleagues taking part in various challenges such as the Yorkshire 3 Peaks and a very popular Marie Curie Bond. Our colleagues have also contributed over 5000 hours of volunteering time to Marie Curie to date.

Lola Rowe, a Marie Curie Hospice Nurse, who launched the campaign, has been very impressed with the level of support received:

Thank you to everybody who has contributed to the Hour of Need fundraising campaign for Marie Curie. It is an amazing amount of money that has been donated to date and is allowing myself and my colleagues to provide even more support to people in their hour of need.

Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive of Marie Curie, thanked everyone for their support:

We’d like to say a huge congratulations and thank you to all the Yorkshire Building Society staff and customers who have supported the Hour of Need campaign so far and made it such an overwhelming success.

How you can help

Every £20 raised funds one hour of Marie Curie nursing care. There are a variety of ways you can support us in helping people with terminal illnesses and their families:

  • pop into any branch or agency to make a donation
  • visit our Just Giving webpage and donate online to one of our fundraising events
  • make a donation by text; send the code HOFR50 and the amount of your donation to 70070 (e.g. to donate £10 text 'HOFR50 £10' to 70070). It's simple and quick and you are even able to gift aid your donation. There is no charge for the text. The only charge will be the donation itself.

Thank you for your support.
