Ed Anderson BSc, CPFA - Chairman

Ed Anderson joined the Board in 2003 and was appointed Chairman on 1st January 2007. He is member of the Nominations, Remuneration and Risk Committees. 

Ed is an accountant by training and has divided his career between airport management and local councils. He was Managing Director of Leeds Bradford International airport until retirement in September 2007 and was previously an executive director at Leeds City Council. Ed is Chairman, and a past President, of the Leeds Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the council of the University of Leeds. as well as being a member of various other local organisations.

 

Richard Davey BA - Vice Chairman

Richard Davey joined the Board in September 2005 and is a member of the Audit, Nominations and Risk Committees.

Richard has an investment banking background and was, for many years, one of the most senior investment bankers in the City. He spent a number of years at N M Rothschild and Sons, until his retirement in 1999, where he became Head of Investment Banking. He has extensive experience of the financial services sector having run Rothschild’s Financial Services Group working with a number of high street banks and insurers. Richard has previously served as a non-executive director on the Boards of Freeserve Plc and Scottish Widows Life Assurance prior to its sale to Lloyds Bank and was a member of the Take-Over Panel Appeals Committee in the late 1990s. Richard is also a non-executive director of Seven Trent Plc and Amlin Plc.

 

 

Julie Baddeley MA - Non-Executive Director

Julie Baddeley joined the board in 2001 and is chairman of the Remuneration Committee. She also, on behalf of the Board, oversees the Society's policy on 'Treating Customers Fairly'.

Starting her career in employee relations, Julie is a management consultant. She was formerly an executive director at Woolwich plc where she had responsibility for e-commerce, information technology and human resources. Julie is an Associate Fellow of the Saïd Business School, Oxford and lectures on a range of management subjects. She also holds a number of directorships in the public and private sector, including Greggs Plc.

 

Lynne Charlesworth BA, MBA - Non-Executive Director

 

Lynne CharlesworthLynne Charlesworth joined the Board in December 2006 and is a member of the Risk Committee. She is also a Trustee of the Society's Pension Scheme. Lynne has a background in risk management particularly within the financial services and property sectors. She has worked within the building society industry and became Group Risk Manager of Abbey National Plc when it took over the former National & Provincial Building Society.

During the last ten years, Lynne has founded a successful property and asset management business and is now joint Managing Director of a private investment company, St. James Investments Limited.

 

Philip Johnson - Non-Executive Director

Philip Johnson 

Philip Johnson joined the Board on 1 June 2007 following his retirement as a partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP where he was Head of Audit Quality & Risk Management and chairman of the Deloilte Audit Committee. Philip was appointed chairman of the Society's Audit Committee on 1 January 2008.

During his 30 years with Deloitte, Philip specialised in providing advisory and assurance services to large corporate clients. He has had considerable experience of financial services through leading some major investigations in the sector. From 2003 Philip headed the Quality and Risk management division for the UK Audit practice of Deloitte where he had responsibility for all matters relating to quality, risk management and regulation. Philip is Chairman of the influential Audit Working Party of the European Federation of Accountants and is also a member of the Audit Committee of the Wellcome Trust.

 

David Paige BSc, FCA - Non-Executive Director

 

David PaigeDavid Paige joined the board in December 2006 and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committees. David, a chartered accountant, has extensive experience within the financial services industry on the risk, financial and audit sides.

David was a partner at Coopers & Lybrand in their financial services division before moving into senior executive positions with NatWest Bank Plc, Zurich Financial Services and Aviva Plc. At the end of 2006 David retired from his position as Executive Director (Risk) at Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group Plc. David holds a number of other directorships, including Helphire Group Plc.

 

Indira Thambiah BSc, MBA, ACA – Non-Executive Director

Indira Thambiah 

Indira Thambiah joined the Board on 1 May 2008. She has an accountancy background but has spent most of her professional life within the retail sector. 

Indira has worked with Asda Walmart in a number of roles including setting up Asda’s online operation and also developing effective sourcing solutions to achieve huge savings in running costs. In 2002, Indira moved to the Home Retail Group, initially as Head of E-commerce for the Argos business where she developed an award winning online operation, and latterly as Head of Multi-Channel Retail which covered e-commerce business across the Group including Argos, Homebase and their associated financial services operation.

At the beginning of 2008 Indira became a freelance consultant, continuing to work in the retail sector. She advises clients predominantly on multi-channel retailing, including global expansion, particularly in India.

 

Simon Turner BSc – Non-Executive Director

Simon Turner joined the Board in October 2005 and is a member of the Audit and Remuneration Committees.

Simon has extensive experience in a large multi-national retail environment. He joined what was the Dixons Group (now DSG International Plc) in 1999, where he became the Managing Director of PC World in the UK, as well as managing all the computing businesses of the Group both in the UK and internationally. He is currently the Group Purchasing Director for DSG International Plc and is a member of their Group Executive Committee.

Prior to joining Dixons, Simon worked for Philips where he was Managing Director of their electronics business in the UK and Ireland. He had previously worked as Senior Vice President for Philips Media, with responsibility for its European operations.
