CHARITABLE FOUNDATION CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE FUND DONATES £100,000

Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has donated £100,000 through its Coronavirus Response Fund to support smaller charities during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The £100,000 has been made in donations of £500 to £2,000 to 61 UK charities that are helping communities across the country to cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gordon Rogers, Chair of Trustees for Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said:

The impact that coronavirus is having across the country including the charity sector is unparalleled. Through our fund we are helping charities that are supporting the ongoing needs of the most vulnerable people in our communities. We prioritised smaller charities that have an income of £100,000 or less and ones that are helping vulnerable people who are self-isolating, supplying items for foodbanks, or alleviating the impact of children no longer receiving free school meals due to school closures.

Coronavirus Response Fund impact

Black Heroes Foundation received a donation of £1,950 to set up and run an online activity club for the elderly and isolated. Taking activities into the living rooms of isolated elders and nursing homes. Providing engaging, enjoyable, informative, inclusive and stimulating activities, using a digital platform to meet the gap caused by the closure of clubs for the elderly due to Coronavirus.

Joyce Fraser, Chair of Black Heroes Foundation, said:

This funding is going to make such a difference to our vulnerable and isolated members of the BAME community. Our community is heavily impacted by Covid-19 with many members suffering from isolation, grief and desolation. Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation was the only funder that has supported us so far during these times. I was almost at the point of having to give up on our plans, despite having elders clubs queuing up and waiting to join our online club. We just did not have enough funding to carry on. A huge thank you for your support.

A donation of £1,900 was made to Phoenix Health & Wellbeing in Leeds that is using the funding towards an online and telephone service to support individuals who are at high risk during the pandemic, such as people diagnosed or being treated for cancer or other immunocompromised conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

Gill Trevor, Director at Phoenix Health & Wellbeing, said:

We are so pleased with the donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation. It will help us continue to provide our support services to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities throughout the outbreak.

Emmaus Sheffield is another charity that is benefitting from the fund. It has received a £2,000 donation that will be used to keep its Community Home running throughout the outbreak, providing a home, work and support for the city’s vulnerable homeless community.

Martin Davies, Chair of Emmaus Sheffield, said:

We are very thankful for the donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation that will help us carry on our work through the coronavirus outbreak. The services we provide are supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our communities at this time.
