Money Minds is an innovative ‘financial education programme’ developed to inspire children and young people to learn about money and give our colleagues a new impactful way of volunteering within the community.
Since we launched in January 2016, over 200 of our colleagues have registered their interest and 65 courses have been delivered in schools around the country.
Feedback has been very positive: “We delivered the Project Party session yesterday and it was fantastic! The kids loved it and we did too! The feedback from the teacher and the children was great. In fact the children said that “it was the best lesson they have ever had”. Will love to do more of these sessions for other age groups as well” – Rehana Bashir, Customer Representative, Dewsbury Branch.
Each volunteer will have completed Classroom Ethics and Safeguarding Awareness training and have familiarised themselves with the course, ensuring they are ready to deliver this within the classroom in small groups or in pairs.
This activity will often be our volunteers' first classroom experience and so should be supported by the classroom teacher. All activities have been designed to promote discussion and share learnings among children and young people. Depending on the size of the class and the range of ability levels, there will be instances where specific task support from the classroom teacher would help the students to progress through the activities, ensuring they get the most out of the session. Teachers remain responsible for the behaviour of the class during the session.
Q. Will the volunteer have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check?
Yorkshire Building Society operates a ‘safer recruitment policy’, but our volunteers won’t be DBS checked. Volunteers within schools should be supervised at all times, and supervision is the school’s responsibility.
Q. How can my school get involved?
A. For schools to get involved they now need to complete the request form on www.money-minds.co.uk.
Q. How can I feedback on the course?
A. We really welcome feedback so classroom teachers will be given an Evaluation Form for completion and return, you can also drop an email to email@example.com.
Aimed at age 5-7, students will test and expand their vocabulary thinking about money related words. Using their imagination to decide what ‘Tiny’ should do with his prize money and thinking about how and why we keep money safe!
Aimed at age 5-7, students will start thinking about the difference between items we want and items we need. Using their reasoning skills, students will identify needs and wants in the home and on a desert island, then use their budgeting skills to prioritise needs and wants for a trip to the cinema.
Aimed at age 8-11, students will delve into planning a celebration event. They will be introduced to controlling a budget and costing. They will need to use their decision making and mathematical skills to come to a general consensus about their event as a team.
Aimed at age 8-11, students will be responsible for planning an exciting family holiday. They will consider budgets for their given family circumstances, calculating distances to airports and travel costs to ensure they do not break the bank! Students develop posters and/or leaflets and use a creative pitch to 'sell' the holiday - will their classmates be convinced?
Aimed at 11-14 years, students will take on the role of financial advisers for a family. Using budgeting skills, they will assess the family spending, look at whether they spend more than they earn and create a workable budget for the family to use.
Aimed at age 11-14, students will dive in to designing and launching a product for the market. They will need to be creative and work as a team to convince the financial backers that their ideas are profitable and worth investing in.
Aimed at age 14-16, students will explore the world of wages and pay. This session introduces salaries, tax and national insurance as a practical and engaging way to develop core numeracy skills that can be applied to the real world.
Aimed at age 14-16, students will calculate the interest on different types of loans and reflect on the risks and responsibilities of entering into a loan agreement. They will understand the vocabulary relating to loans and consider the different types of loan available.
Aimed at age 16-19, students will be sharing their ideas whilst getting engaged in discussions that consider pensions and the importance of planning for long term financial futures.
Aimed at age 16+, students will consider the pros and cons of fixed versus variable rates, assess a household’s affordability, consider different options for house purchase. They will also explore the concept of Loan to Value and carry out mortgage repayment calculations.
