Changing your mortgage payment

Once you’ve completed on your mortgage, you’re committed to making regular payments until it’s paid off, the house sells, or you switch your deal . But at Yorkshire Building Society, we understand that your situation can change which may affect how much you can afford to pay. Here are some of the ways we can help if this happens to you.

YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

Reducing or extending your mortgage term

If you choose to extend your mortgage term, your monthly payment may reduce, but you’ll pay more interest in the long run. Similarly, shortening your mortgage term will see you pay more of your mortgage off per month, and less interest overall.

Changing your mortgage payment date

It’s usually no problem to change your payment date so it fits in better with your incomings and outgoings – just let us know when suits you.

Getting professional advice

We can organise a visit from a debt counsellor to help you discuss ways of managing your money if you’re having difficulties, or need to sort out a payment plan. We may add the cost of these visits to your mortgage account.

Making overpayments

If your finances have changed for the better, paying more than your usual monthly payment could knock years off your mortgage loan. But depending on the type of mortgage you have, you may have to pay an early repayment charge.
