Flood Advice

Tips to help prevent loss during flooding to your home

  1. Have sandbags ready - your local council may be able to provide these - and boards ready to block doors. Do this in good time!
  2. Prepare a 'Flood Pack' and make sure that everyone in your home or business knows where it is. The pack should include: a torch, battery-operated radio (with spare batteries), a first aid kit, warm clothes, blankets and bottles of water. Keep it in a safe place
  3. Be prepared to move furniture and valuable items upstairs or to a safe place, out of danger. Remember to include items like photos and valuable paperwork that have high sentimental value and will be difficult to replace
  4. Listen out for flood warnings on your local TV and radio stations. The Environment Agency has a 24-hour information service called Floodline available on 0345 988 1188 and also a website which provides useful advice such as alerts and updates on floods: www.environment-agency.gov.uk
  5. Keep your Home Insurance documentation close by, including the claims telephone number. The insurance company will be able to provide you with further advice on protecting your home

If you have been flooded?

  • If you are able, switch off gas, water and electricity
  • Contact your insurance company they will be able to help and advise you
  • Take extreme care and do not walk in flood water, if you can avoid it
  • Always wash your hands with soap and clean water after being in contact with floodwater, sewage or items that may have come into contact with floodwater
  • Have a map of your local area handy. If you decide to evacuate, bear in mind that some local roads may already be blocked and impassable. Do not attempt to drive across flooded roads.
