YBS appoints John Heaps as Chairman Designate
20 November 2014
Yorkshire Building Society is pleased to announce the appointment of John Heaps as Chairman Designate with immediate effect. John will succeed Ed Anderson as Chairman at the conclusion of the Society’s AGM in April 2015 when Ed retires from the Board.
Ed joined the Society’s Board as a Non-executive Director in 2003 and became Chairman on 1 January 2007.
John, who is a lawyer by training, is the former Chairman of corporate law firm Eversheds, having served on its Board since 2008 and before that its Senior Management Team since 1999. During his time as Chairman he was ultimately responsible for the firm’s compliance with the legal sector’s regulatory regime. John contributed significantly to the development of the firm’s long term strategy and helped drive considerable change as it grew from its UK base into a major international law firm.
Since standing down as Chairman of Eversheds earlier this year, he has continued his role as a litigation partner and will remain with the firm until April 2015.
John is a member of the Business and Oversight Board of the Law Society, serves on the Risk and Audit and Constitutional Committees of the International Bar Association and is a trustee of the Garden Bridge Trust, a project to build a new Thames crossing between Blackfriars and Waterloo.
Lynne Charlesworth, Vice Chairman of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “Under Ed’s leadership the Society has completed a number of mergers and acquisitions, with its assets growing from £20 billion to in excess of £35 billion. Throughout this time Ed has provided outstanding leadership and helped to successfully steer the organisation through the recession and global economic crisis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ed for his excellent leadership and contribution to the Society and wish him well for the future.
“I am delighted that John has accepted the role of Chairman. He has the experience and skills required to chair the Board of a large organisation operating in a highly regulated industry. This combined with his proven track record for innovation and successful strategic leadership, makes him the ideal candidate to take the Society forward.”
John Heaps, Chairman Designate of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “I am very proud to have been chosen as the next Chairman of such a well-respected and successful mutual organisation. Ed has led the Yorkshire extremely well through a period of considerable change. Under his leadership the Society has gone from strength to strength, despite the hugely turbulent global economic climate and I look forward to building on his great legacy.”
