Society wins prestigious charity award for Marie Curie fundraising challenge
21 May 2015
The Society’s award in the challenge event category recognised the success of colleagues from the Society who took part in cycle endurance tests to raise £54,000 for Marie Curie last June.
It formed part of the Society’s ongoing Hour of Need campaign, which will enable Marie Curie Nurses to provide even more vital support for people living with a terminal illness and their families across the UK.
Every £20 raised in Yorkshire Building Society’s Hour of Need campaign will fund one hour of care. The Society is aiming to raise £500,000 by December 2016, which equates to funding an hour of care by a Marie Curie Nurse for every hour of the campaign.
Almost 50 colleagues undertook a part in completing the 339-mile route of the opening three stages of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart, of which the Society was an official partner.
A wider challenge was held across all of the Society's branches and office sites with colleagues tasked to ride 118 miles on exercise bikes in one day – the same distance as the first stage of the tour - and a total distance of 15,774 miles was covered over the course of the day.
Mike Wright, Judge for the Third Sector Business Charity Awards, said: "It was an engaging challenge that made clear the nature of the partnership with Marie Curie and had high levels of employee engagement."
Yorkshire Building Society’s Corporate Responsibility Manager Pauline Giroux, said: “It was an honour to be able to collect this award on behalf of everyone at Yorkshire Building Society, and it is fantastic recognition of the good work that we all do in our communities.
“The challenge itself raised over £54,000 for the Hour of Need campaign which will have funded 2,700 hours of Marie Curie nursing care and our members and customers showed great generosity in backing our efforts.”
Joanna Hancock, Head of Corporate Account Management from Marie Curie, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all Yorkshire Building Society staff who took up this great challenge for Marie Curie and helped raise a fantastic amount for the Hour of Need fundraising campaign.”
