What is a prepaid funeral plan?

The Prepaid Funeral Plan is a way to prepay and prearrange a funeral.

All three plans guarantee to cover the funeral director fees for arranging and conducting the funeral, no matter how far in the future it may be needed and how much funeral costs may rise in that time.

Each plan also covers the crematorium fee and Minister or Officiant's fees or, where a burial is requested, provides a £1,220 contribution towards burial costs which rises in line with inflation.

Once paid in full, each plan guarantees to cover the services listed in the plan, regardless of how much prices rise or when the funeral is needed.

Help protect your family from rising funeral costs

A Prepaid Funeral Plan not only avoids loved ones being left with an unexpected bill to cover the cost of the sevices in the plan, it will also allow you to document your funeral wishes in advance. This can ensure your loved ones don't end up spending on things they think you would have wanted, and so can focus on their own personal tributes.

At Yorkshire Building Society we’re pleased to introduce our provider of funeral planning Dignity, one of the UK’s leading providers of pre-arranged funeral plans.

Our relationship with Dignity means we can offer you guaranteed protection against the rising funeral costs covered in the funeral plans, with the added reassurance of expert support and guidance from an established network of funeral directors.

With a Prepaid Funeral Plan, no matter how much prices might rise in the future, once you've paid you’ll never have to pay a penny more for the services in the plan.

Why choose a
prepaid Funeral Plan?

  • It helps save you money
You can protect against future price increases by fixing the costs of the funeral services in the plan at today’s prices.

  • It’s a fixed price plan
Once your plan is paid for, you will never be asked to pay a penny more for the services included in the plan.

  • It’s practical
Take care of funeral arrangements in advance.

  • It protects your loved ones
Helping to save them both money and worry.

  • It’s flexible
You can pay with a lump sum or spread the cost over 12 monthly instalments at no extra cost.

  • It’s straightforward
There are no hidden clauses. If you’re aged 50 or over, you’re guaranteed to be accepted with no health or medical restrictions.

What's included?

All our plans have a standard set of included elements, namely:

What's included in our plans?

  • The funeral arrangements, including finding a funeral director, deciding on the details and dealing with the services covered in the plan
  • The services of a trusted and professional funeral director to arrange and conduct the funeral
  • The coffin, the hearse and, if selected, limousines
  • For a cremation, the Crematorium and Minister or Officiant's fee or
  • A contribution of £1,220 towards a burial funeral (rising with RPI inflation)
  • A customer service team available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Advice and bereavement counselling for loved ones
  • A 90 day cancellation period with full refund in case you change your mind during this period

What's not included in our plans?

  • Embalming, burial plot, memorial or headstone
  • Minister’s/Officiant’s fee for a service at a different location before the cremation or burial
  • Flowers
  • Catering/wake
  • Fees of doctors or coroners
  • Repatriation from outside mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight
  • Costs for removing artificial limbs and mechanisms such as pacemakers
  • Costs associated with changes in regulations, tax, laws or generally accepted practice, which result in additional costs or affect the conduct of the funeral

This list is an example of only some of the services that are not included in our plans. Please note this list is not exhaustive.

Medical certification fees

For deaths where a coroner investigation is required, there are no medical certification fees. Also, changes to legislation in May 2015 mean there will no longer be a charge for a medical certification for any deaths registered in Scotland. Similar legal changes are being considered for the rest of the UK, so we do not include provision for these fees in our Plans. If the funeral takes place outside of Scotland, and a coroner is not involved, then if applicable, the medical certification fees must be paid by the next of kin or personal representative, when arranging the funeral.

Plan pricing

There is a choice of three funeral plans that all include a range of guaranteed funeral services. You can pay with a lump sum or spread the cost over 12 months at no extra charge, secure in the knowledge that you won’t have to make any future payments for the services in the plan.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our Pre-paid Funeral Plans

What is included in each plan?

There are three plans to choose from. Each plan includes the services of a trusted and professional funeral director to arrange and conduct the funeral, along with the coffin, the hearse and, if selected with the Pearl or Diamond plan, limousines.

For a cremation, the Crematorium and Minister or Officiant’s fee is covered. For a burial, a contribution of £1,220 is made towards burial fees.

For full details of what is included in each plan, click here to compare plans.

What payment options are available?

You can pay for your plan with a one-off payment by cheque, postal orders or credit or debit card. Or you can spread the cost over 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit.

Can I add special requests into my plan?

Yes, you can add special requests at any time by calling Dignity. They’ll document the requests within your plan at no cost, and will advise if there are any costs incurred from these requests. For example if you have requested an additional limousine. You can contribute towards the cost of special requests, and the amount contributed will rise in line with RPI. If you decide not to contribute, any additional costs relating to special requests would need to be paid for at the time of the funeral by the person arranging the funeral.

How will my loved ones know what to do when I pass away?

When the plan is set up, Dignity will send you a Plan holder pack that tells you everything you need to know. This includes important information for your Funeral Organiser who is the person who you would like to put your plan into motion when the time comes. The pack also explains how you can add personal touches or request extra services to your plan if you wish.

Do I have to live in the UK to buy a plan?

The plan covers the cost of certain funerals, as long as they’re conducted in mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, the Isle of Man or the Isle of Wight. You need to be able to provide a fixed UK address in order for Dignity to allocate a Nominated Funeral Director. If you reside abroad, Dignity would anticipate you having family in the UK if you intend for your funeral to be conducted here, so you could provide the address of a relative. The plan does not cover the cost of repatriation from outside of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, the Isle of Man or the Isle of Wight

Can I specify a burial with the prepaid Funeral Plan?

A burial funeral is available. All plans guarantee to cover the funeral director costs for arranging and conducting a cremation or burial funeral, no matter how far in the future it may be needed and how much funeral costs may rise in that time.

Where a burial is requested, the plans provide a £1,220 contribution towards burial costs which rises in line with inflation. Burial costs can't be guaranteed in the same way as a cremation as costs vary widely across the country.

What happens if Dignity goes out of business?

The money for the funeral would still be protected because it is legally separate from Dignity. In the unlikely event that Dignity were to go out of business it may however mean that they would be unable to provide the funeral they had promised to provide. If this happened the Managing Trustees of the National Funeral Trust would work with the remaining Nominated Funeral Directors, and where necessary seek to appoint new Nominated Funeral Directors, to continue to provide services to Plan holders.

What if I change my mind – can I have a refund?

From the date you receive your Plan holder pack, you have 90 days to cancel the plan and receive a full refund. If you cancel after that time there’s a £249 cancellation fee, which will be deducted from the refund.

Everything you need to know about the prepaid Funeral Plan

Why we’ve chosen to work with Dignity

Being a society you can trust is what we pride ourselves on. We choose to work with companies who share the same values as us. That’s why we’re pleased to be working with Dignity. Our combined experience means you’re in safe hands.

How the plan works

  1. Choose a funeral plan that suits you from the three we offer. The cost of the services in your plan will be fixed at today's price. Once paid for, your loved ones won’t need to pay a penny more for any of the services included in your plan.

  2. Once you've taken out your Funeral Plan, keep the Planholder Pack that Dignity send you in a safe place until it is needed (they will also send you a second copy for the person you nominate as your Funeral Organiser).

  3. Rest assured that even though it may be many years before your funeral plan is actually used, your money will be protected. All the money you pay for your Plan is placed into a secure fund, the National Funeral Trust Fund, that is completely independent of Dignity.

  4. Add or amend special requests at any time. Special requests allow you to personalise the plan - and you can add as much or as little detail as you wish.††

  5. When the services from your Funeral Plan are required, your Nominated Funeral Organiser just has to make one phone call to Dignity to put the plan into motion.

  6. Dignity nominate a Funeral Director to organise the funeral in accordance with the plan and in consultation with your Funeral Organiser.

  7. The Dignity Nominated Funeral Director is paid directly from the National Funeral Trust Fund and as long as the plan has been paid in full, your loved ones will have no more to pay for the services in the plan.††

  8. ††Some special requests will incur a charge above the cost of the plan.
