How to get a mortgage with Yorkshire Building Society

When you’ve found a new property or the perfect mortgage deal, it can often still be quite confusing to know the best way to go about applying.

Ways to apply

Before you begin an application, it’s worth taking some time to find out all the available options, so you’ll be better prepared and more informed when you’re ready to apply. We’re available in branchover the phone and online so whichever stage of the process you’re at, there’s always someone on hand to help. You can complete your application online without advice, or you can speak to a mortgage adviser in one of our branches or over the phone.

Get a lending decision

The first question you’ll want an answer to is ‘can I get a mortgage?’ so the first step to a mortgage with us is obtaining a lending decision or ‘Approval in Principle’. Using our online Approval in Principle form, we can tell you in just 10 minutes whether or not we would be able to lend to you and if so, how much.

Before you embark on an application you should refer to our mortgage lending criteria, which tells you how we decide who to lend to. We also have information on how your income and expenditure affect your ability to obtain a mortgage. You should also refer to our borrowing and repayment calculator to check how much a mortgage might cost you.

The full mortgage application

As soon as you’ve obtained a successful lending decision and you have chosen a property you’d like to purchase, you’re ready to move onto your full application. We’ll need to take a few more details about your employment and finances and you will have an opportunity to select a suitable mortgage deal from our range.

It’s a good idea to refer to our information on our fees and charges as well as guidance on getting a mortgage valuation and survey on the property. You will also need to provide us with the name of the solicitor or legal advisers acting on your behalf.
